Organizations Use Far-Reaching Discussion to Inaugurate New Partnership
During AACPDM 64th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC
Washington, DC – United Cerebral Palsy (UCP), a leading service provider and advocate for children and adults with an array of disabilities, and the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) have invited leading experts from around the world to discuss the future of cerebral palsy (CP) and other developmental disabilities at Shared Learning, Global Transformation: The Changing Landscape for Cerebral Palsy & Other Developmental Disabilities, on Wednesday, September 22, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. ET at the Newseum, 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC.
The event inaugurates a partnership between the organizations at AACPDM’s 64th Annual Meeting, featuring a Panel Discussion/Presentation made possible through the generosity of the Cerebral Palsy International Research Foundation (CPIRF). During this presentation, which will also stream LIVE on UCP’s website, leading researchers, medical experts, technologists and futurists will explore advances in the field that are changing the way that people with disabilities live their lives.
This new partnership links one of the country’s largest health care nonprofits – UCP – with the leading coalition of physicians and researchers in the field of CP and developmental medicine – AACPDM. While there have been major advances in understanding CP and other development disabilities over the last 150 years, an explosion in research, patient to patient networks and advances in technology, has radically altered the landscape, resulting in a paradigm shift creating a life without limits for people with disabilities.
“We are excited to mark a new partnership with AACPDM to encourage investments in research and treatment in such a public and special way,” said Stephen Bennett, United Cerebral Palsy President and Chief Executive Officer. “At the heart of both of our organizations is the desire to create a life without limits for people with disabilities. This panel -- exploring advances in medicine, research, treatment and the creation of dynamic new networks -- gives us a chance to demonstrate the power of this partnership for people with disabilities. We are honored to be able to help AACPDM kick off its 64th Annual Meeting in such a significant way.”
The panel presentation will be followed by a Governance Reception with leaders from both groups.

UNITED CEREBRAL PALSY MOURNS PASSING OF JOHN W. KLUGE
Philanthropist’s generosity toward disabilities research helped transform lives
Washington, DC (September 9, 2010) – United Cerebral Palsy (UCP), a leading service provider and advocate for children and adults with disabilities, mourns the loss of philanthropist John W. Kluge, 95, who passed away on Tuesday, September 9 at his home near Charlottesville, Va. His generosity extended to UCP and its research efforts toward developmental disabilities.
“Mr. Kluge played a significant role in advancing research of cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities,” said Stephen Bennett, UCP’s President & Chief Executive Officer. “While his recent philanthropy was focused on education and the arts, he remains one of UCP’s heroes for his deep concern and generosity for advances in health care for people with disabilities.”
Mr. Kluge played a pivotal leadership role in the United Cerebral Palsy Research and Educational Foundation, now the Cerebral Palsy International Research Foundation (CPIRF). Beginning in 1972, he served as vice president and later president and chair of the UCP Research and Education Foundation. His gift of $2.5 million to the foundation was a pivotal moment in its history, and he quietly made other significant gifts since leaving his leadership post with the research foundation.
James C. Stearns, President of CPIRF’s Board of Directors, noted that Mr. Kluge was among an increasingly rare group of philanthropists who understood that medical advances often only come after significant study and years of work. “John Kluge understood that serving others wasn’t always a ‘quick fix.’ His generosity and deep understanding that medical research would one day transform the lives of people with disabilities continues to serve as an example for our work today.”

In addition to the hosts, British Ambassador & Lady Sheinwald, attendees included Actor and UCP Board Trustee Cheryl Hines; Alan Dickson, Chief Executive, Capability Scotland; Stephen Bennett, President & CEO, United Cerebral Palsy; Bruce Merlin Fried, Chair, Board of Trustees, United Cerebral Palsy; Joe Stettinius, President, Cassidy Turley, the event’s Transatlantic Underwriter; Linda, Jack and David Maguire; current and former legislators; government officials; corporate leaders; advocates; members of the United Cerebral Palsy Board of Trustees, the majority of whom are people, or part of family, impacted by disabilities; and embassy staff.

Washington, D.C. (April 2, 2010) – United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) applauds President Obama's March 30 signing of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (H.R. 4872) into law, which contains "fixes" to the health care reform bill (H.R. 3590). This historic legislation is certain to rank among the top domestic legislative achievements of this generation. It will bring about comprehensive health care reform that will benefit nearly all Americans while reducing the federal deficit.
The Disability Policy Collaboration, and UCP's grasstops and grassroots work were instrumental in securing enactment of this landmark legislation.
"We are extremely pleased that the new law marks the attainment of several of United Cerebral Palsy’s priority public policy goals, because people with intellectual and developmental disabilities will benefit greatly from a number of important provisions of the law," said Stephen Bennett, President & CEO, United Cerebral Palsy. "However we know that no bill is perfect, and we have a significant amount of work ahead to ensure the law is implemented properly. This includes the impact some of the provisions have on the budgets of the developmental disability provider network without the critical funding supports from the federal and state governments."
"This law, coupled with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590), which President Obama signed last week, will dramatically improve disability related health care and long term services and supports," explained Liz Savage, Director of Health Policy for the Disability Policy Collaboration, who attended the historic ceremony. "These laws represent a sea change in access to quality, affordable health care for people with disabilities."
Law provisions include the following:
Coverage
Benefits
Access to Quality Care
Long Term Services and Supports
Strengthening long-term services and supports through a two pronged approach:
