FAQ: Writing a State Disability Plan

  1. What is the purpose of a state disability plan?

The state disability plan summarizes all of the efforts made by a state commission in one year to include individuals with disabilities in their programs. It also addresses the challenges faced and the plans for the upcoming year.

  2. Is this an activity required by the Corporation?

    Yes, this documentation is required.

  3. How often should the plan be submitted?

The plan should be written yearly and submitted with your Commission Administrative Funds Application.

  4. Who is responsible for writing the disability plan?

The state commission submits the report. It is often written by the disability coordinator, but is an activity that can be sub-contracted to experts in the disability field and paid for with disability funds. States having a disability advisory committee could use that body for this activity.

  5. Is there a specific format that should be followed?

The Corporation does not require a specified format, only that the plan be written in narrative form.

  6. Where can I find the guidelines for writing the plan?

The guidelines can be found in the Commission Administrative Funds Application Guidelines.

  7. What is the essence of the plan?

The plan documents previous successes and challenges in including individuals with disabilities in AmeriCorps programs. It also charts out a plan for the coming year. The plan addresses issues related to reasonable accommodations, technical and training assistance in the area of disabilities, expenditures of the disability funds, outreach to disability organizations and commission initiatives regarding the evaluation and monitoring of the above activities.

  8. Where can I seek assistance in writing the disability plan?

Lots of places! Local professionals in the disability field could be of great assistance in the planning or actual writing of the disability plan. Members of a state's disability advisory committee could be a great resource, as well. Access AmeriCorps, the technical assistance provider for AmeriCorps State Commissions, AmeriCorps *National and AmeriCorps *State Competitive programs can also provide assistance to you. In addition, you can contact your assigned program officer at the Corporation for further information.
