Wheelchair Accessible Sailing Tours
Winthrop, ME, September 1, 2002 – The tall-ship RawFaith sailed by the rocky fir-tree populated island. The wide-eyed boy in the wheelchair at the helm concentrated on holding the course against a strong south wind.
Accessible Sailing Adventures, a non-profit organization, will make such scenes a reality starting this fall with the October 6 launching of a 15th century-styled galleon, RawFaith. The first guests will sail from Bar Harbor on November 1st, according to Captain George McKay. Tours will be available in November.
ASA is on on a special mission to provide an educational and therapeutic experience for children with special physical needs and their families through hands-on sailing of a tall ship. The mission began as a family project and dream three years ago.
ASA now announces a series of dramatic and fulfilling events of great interest to all those confined to wheelchairs but with desire to embark on an exciting tall-ship sailing adventure. For more information, please see the ASA Web site. The site provides a list of scheduled events in October and November. The site also features a mission statement, sign-up lists for construction volunteers, launch helpers, photo galleries of RawFaith construction and a history of the non-profit organization ASA.
To register by phone as a construction or launch volunteer, or as a sailing adventurer, contact Liz McKay at (207) 483-2080 or Priscilla Jenkins at (207) 377-9011.
