Margaret O. Murray, UCPA President Dies at 79 in Kansas City, MO
Margaret O. Murray, past UCPA President from 1977-1981, passed away on November 8, 2001 from natural causes. She was the first woman to serve as the volunteer President of the national disability rights and service organization. Having worked her way through the ranks of the organization, she held the position of Executive Vice President of the Programs Committee just prior to being elected President. Her involvement in UCPA stemmed from her daughter who had cerebral palsy and passed away at age 16.
George Dolim served as UCPA President subsequent to Ms. Murray and cites the inclusion of UCP affiliate clients in all levels and functions of UCPA’s work as her crowning achievement during her term. Ever since, individuals with disabilities have served in important volunteer and staff capacities at UCPA and the UCP affiliates. Over the past fifty years, UCP has grown into one of the largest disability organizations in the United States, through a network of 111 affiliates in 39 states.
