Housing
Funding for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) must be enacted each year through an appropriations bill.
One significant portion of this funding of interest to people with disabilities is the Section 8 voucher program which offers rental assistance. For the last several years there has been an earmark of $40 million in this account for new vouchers to provide rental assistance for people with disabilities. Continuing vouchers are funded through a $15.5 billion account in the 2001 fiscal year.
The Section 811 program funds development of housing and supportive services for people with disabilities. In FY 2001, this program was funded at $213 million.
There also is a set-aside of 30% of the Homeless Assistance Grants that must be used to renew rental subsidies for chronically homeless individuals with disabilities in FY 2001. The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS program received $258 million in FY 2001.
