Record-breaking Year for UCP at Taste of Madison
The
weather was ideal for Taste of Madison this year with an estimated
200,000 people in attendance. Those individuals were thirsty. Over 700
United Cerebral Palsy volunteers served beverages at 22 stands
throughout the two-day event and earned a record amount in tips.UCP’s volunteer beverage servers worked hard selling soda, beer, wine, and milk during the event. They encouraged people to leave tips, explaining that all funds raised benefit UCP’s programs and services. Volunteers cheered, rang cow bells and even danced when individuals tipped, causing a chain reaction of further support.
An
incredible $55,000 was raised in funds for UCP’s programs and
services. As one of UCP’s annual fundraisers, tips collected
at
Taste of Madison are fundamental in carrying on UCP’s
tradition
of helping children, youth and families in Southern Wisconsin.
For
27 years, UCP volunteers have been serving beverages at the event. UCP
would like to thank all of the returning volunteers and new volunteers
who supported our efforts at this year’s Taste of Madison.
The
time, energy and dedication put forth by volunteers help UCP to serve
over 1,200 children and adults with cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy,
Down syndrome, traumatic brain injury and developmental delays in the
community. With the help of volunteers, UCP can continue to make a
difference for those served in the community.Back to top

UCP of Greater Dane County:
Proud CHCWI Member
We are a proud member of Community Health Charities of Wisconsin (CHCWI), a federation of health charities. Through our membership, UCP of Greater Dane County is included in both public and private workplace giving campaigns that reach over 400,000 employees throughout Wisconsin. Workplace giving campaigns allow employees to contribute from their paychecks through payroll deductions that enable a desired gift to be contributed each pay period. These campaigns provide employees the opportunity to specifically choose UCP as the recipient of their contribution. CHCWI’s role is to facilitate contribution efficiency and facilitate connections between employees and its member charities and then to distribute contributions directly to UCP.
CHCWI represents 44 Wisconsin health agencies and is looking for opportunities to open new workplace campaigns in order to increase the amount of funds made available to its members. You may be able to help CHCWI grow. If you have an employee giving program, check to see if CHCWI is represented as a choice. Please contact Trisha Davies, Director of Development, of United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Dane County at (608) 237-8508 for more information.

UCPeople:
UCP Bakers Treat Our Community to Delicious Baked Goods
Tri-berry
muffins. Oatmeal raisin cookies. Raspberry and
white
chocolate chip scones. These are some of the delicious treats
baked by members of our class on “The Art of
Baking,”
taught by Deb Griffith, UCP Community Builder, with assistance from
Steven Triggs, volunteer Master Baker, MATC Occupational Therapy
interns, and volunteers.Over the last two years, more than 30 adults with disabilities have participated in the class, learning
baking skills and customer service, and taking pride in their work. “The bakers are learning to serve products they can feel good about, because everything always tastes great,” says Meredith Chiles, UCP Adult Program Development Director.
The
classes held at the Bridge Lake Point Waunona Neighborhood Center in
Madison enable the bakers to serve their products to people attending
programs there. The bakers and neighborhood center participants truly
enjoy the social aspect of sharing the baked goods and taste-testing
new recipes.“I’ve learned to do more than I could before,” says Steve M., UCP baker. “Before I was just at home all day by myself. Now I want to come out every single day. I get compliments. I had jobs before as a bus boy and a janitor and thought that was the only kind of work I could do. Now I have a job where I can bake things and use my math, handle cash and do inventory. It’s more fun to do things with a group than just by yourself.”

Bakery Launch Campaign
UCP’s bakers have plans to share their tasty treats out in the community. They are currently in the process of setting up a micro-enterprise in order to incorporate into a business and sell their products in a range of locations. Generous donations from the Alliant Energy Foundation and the Friends of Meriter will help the bakers obtain equipment and a cart for selling baked goods and coffee. Community Living Alliance, a local organization, has invited UCP’s bakers to provide baked goods to their office once the micro-enterprise is ready. In preparation for opening the doors to the public, UCP is conducting a “Bakery Launch Campaign.” To become involved, obtain further information or to make a donation, please contact Trisha Davies, Director of Development, at (608) 237-8508 or trishadavies@ucpdane.org.
