Eagle Scout Hopeful Digs The UCP Center

Alex’s project consisted of reconstructing and improving a swale (drainage ditch) near the pump room of the UCP Center’s pool. According to UCP volunteers, Bruce McClenathan and Randall Ward, “The project is something that will make a huge improvement to the camp’s grounds. It will eliminate a flooding problem that the agency has not been able to solve.”

UCP’s Camp Manito facility includes a large pool that is open to people with disabilities, and is specially designed for wheel chair access. Heavy rain storms cause flooding can prevent access to the pool’s machinery.

With the help of volunteers, Alex has dug a wider, deeper, longer, and properly sloped swale. He intends to use landscaping fabric and two 35 foot perforated 4 inch diameter pipes along the bottom of the new ditch. He will finish the area with gravel. Alex not only designed the solution for the flooding he also asked Angerstein’s to donate the materials for the job, which they gladly did.

Though not yet finished, the new swale will be ready and working long before Camp Manito opens in 2008. The volunteers Alex recruited to work on the project included Patrick O'Neill (Alex’s father), Danny & Joe Klusman, Joe Klusman Sr., Jon Cap, Mark & John Distefano, Kevin Pineault, Brett Webb, Ian Constable, Stephen Morente, Victor Machado, and Eric Wegner.
