Pets on Wheels Comes to the Sulphur Spring Center

Pets on Wheels is a not for profit volunteer organization, which provides friendly visits from volunteers and their pets. The Pets on Wheels volunteer, Amy, and her dog, Brooklyn, visit the Center for half an hour each time to socialize with the participants, allowing them to pet Brooklyn and for some to even lead her around the Center on her leash. Individuals with impaired cognitive abilities benefit from the animal’s visit in that they react to animals with more awareness than to people around them. For instance, repetitive speech behavior or certain mannerisms may cease while an individual is petting an animal. The visits also improve memory skills and encourage conversation among the participants about family pets that they have now or once did as children. Pets love unconditionally and their warmth makes a difference to those they visit. The participants at UCP’s Sulphur Spring Day Center are looking forward to seeing Brooklyn again soon!
