Traditional methods of testing cognition and learning are not accessible to children with severe physical and speech impairments; this is especially true for children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). These conventional, standardized tests that are conducted in a school setting or traditional clinical setting do not provide accurate information about the child’s abilities because the child to either speak or point to answers questions. Our team of investigators recognize that accurate test information is critical for the child’s education and life planning. As a result the Adapted Neuropsychological Assesment of Children (ANAC) has been developed to address this need through alternate testing methods and the use of Assistive Technology (AT) . The outcome of this research has offered parents and educators with a more accurate and well-rounded profile of the child’s abilities and encourages collaboration among all parties who serve the child. This type of individualized profile can then generate appropriate supports in the child’s school, home and community settings. Other ACAL research includes Processing Speed and an Educational Liaison Pilot Study.

Visit the ACAL website at http://www.med.umich.edu/pmr/acal/index.htm for information and resources and for opportunities for participating in various research. To inquire for more information e-mail ANAC-Project@med.umich.edu or call 734-936-6023.
