Ramps for Independence!

This program was created from generous donations raised by Neil Sauter who walked over 832 miles across the entire state on stilts in the summer of 2008. Neil, who has cerebral palsy, believes that anyone can rise above his/her challenges. Due to Neil’s efforts and the need for ramps for people with disabilities, including cerebral palsy, Ramps for Independence was created.

Many people with disabilities, including cerebral palsy, are unable to gain access to their communities because their homes are inaccessible. As funding permits, Ramps for Independence will provide ramps to individuals who meet the guidelines below. You must:

  • Either have cerebral palsy or be a family member of a person with cerebral palsy who lives with you,
  • Have less than a 28” rise between the door where the ramp will be used and the ground, you will need to be sure there is enough space to get on and off the ramp,
  • Receive Social Security benefits,
  • Reside in any Michigan county except Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb (if you live in these counties, contact UCP Detroit at 1-800-827-4843),
  • Have been denied funding from other sources (e.g. Michigan Assistive Technology Loan Fund, Children’s Special Health Care Services, or your local Community Mental Health agency), and
  • Have a doctor’s prescription stating the need for the ramp.

If you meet the guidelines above and would like to apply for a ramp, you can call us or download an application here:

If you do not meet the conditions above, you can still let us know you are in need of a ramp. We will place your name on a waiting list. If funding becomes available, we will contact you. We may show our waiting list, without names, to possible funders so they will see the need to expand the program.

Once you submit an application, someone will contact you by phone or e-mail. We look forward to working with you.

Please contact UCP Michigan at 1.800.828.2714 if you have any questions.
