Disability and Land Use: New Connections
UCP Michigan is pleased to announce its new project, Disability and Land Use: New Connections, funded by the Developmental Disabilities Council. This project is a result of our partnership with the Michigan Land Use Institute (MLUI) over the past four years. While our work together began with transportation issues, we quickly realized that land use is an essential part of providing good public transportation service for people with disabilities. Sprawling, physically inaccessible communities are very difficult to navigate, whether as a pedestrian or a public transportation rider.
The latest product of UCP and MLUI’s collaboration, “Follow the Money”, analyzes how Michigan’s decisions about spending public money can either encourage or discourage sprawl. The report has been well received and was highlighted in the Detroit News.
Our recent work on sprawl and disability has led to our new project, Disability and Land Use: New Connections. Its purpose is to develop and disseminate a policy and research report on land use and people with disabilities. Our initial research on the issue of land use and people with disabilities reveals that very little work has been done in this area. Any exploration we make in this area will be a pioneering effort.
If you would like to know more about our work on land use issues or would like to receive a copy of the report, contact UCP Michigan at 800-828-2714.
