Home Accessibility Renovations

Question:
Where can I get help making my home more accessible?

Answer:
Some Habitat for Humanity affiliates take on renovations and ramp building, as well as new construction that’s accessible. The International Association of Lions Clubs and Habitat for Humanity International recently partnered in an initiative to build accessible homes for low-income families in which someone has a disability. Contact Habitat for Humanity of Michigan at 800-467-5430 for the phone number of the affiliate in your area.

Rebuilding Together, an affiliate of Christmas in April, is a volunteer organization that does home improvements for senior citizens and people with disabilities of any age. Contact them at 800-473-4229.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture sometimes funds accessibility renovations for houses in rural areas. Contact Robert Bertram at 888-771-6993.

Many cities and counties receive federal Community Development Block Grants and set aside money for home repairs and accessibility renovations. Contact your city or county’s Community Development, Planning, or Housing office.

Community Mental Health Services may provide funds for ramps or home renovations to eligible people as part of person centered planning. Your local CMH is listed in the county government section of the phone book or online at www.michigan.gov/mdch.

Children’s Special Health Care Services’ Trust Fund will help families with a child up to age 21 to pay part of the cost for a ramp. Contact them through your county Health Department or at 800-359-3722 or online at www.michigan.gov/mdch.

The Department of Human Services' Physical Disability Services may help adults with ramps and home modifications. Your local DHS office is listed in the county government section of the phone book or online at www.michigan.gov/dhs

At your local level, you may also want to check with service clubs, construction classes at schools, college fraternities, and churches.

The Michigan Assistive Technology Loan Fund makes loans to credit worthy applicants. The work you need done might qualify. Contact Leah March, Loan Fund Manager, at 800-828-2714 or info@michiganloanfunds.org
