Board Member Spotlight: Mike Ward
Board member Mike Ward has been on a creative path all his life. He graduated from University of Michigan School of Art with a BFA in Communication Design, then started his career with Doner Advertising in 1978. In 1990, Mike was promoted to vice president and in 1991, was named to his current title, senior vice president, creative director.
Over the years, Mike has distinguished himself on such accounts as Canadian Tire, Ball Park Franks, The Detroit Zoo, Iams/Eukanuba, Nine Lives, Progressive Insurance, Chiquita Brands International, La-Z-Boy, Cleveland Clinic, Blockbuster, the American Kennel Club and Buffets, Inc.
Growing up in Port Huron as the seventh out of eight children in taught Mike to be mindful of others. He credits his parents with teaching each member of the family the value in helping others. Mike’s mother, Marjorie, was named a Point of Light by then President George H. Bush for her volunteer efforts. Throughout his school years, he has volunteered for many service and political organizations.
Mike began his involvement with United Cerebral Palsy in 1994 by creating several award-winning public service announcement TV ads. He was asked to become a board member soon after and has served in almost every capacity since that time. Nine years ago he used his volunteer spirit and his love of hockey to develop a charity hockey event with the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association. This is considered one of the signature events for United Cerebral Palsy for fundraising and creating awareness.
Mike and his wife, Angela, have two children, Danny and Emilia. He also serves on the advisory board for the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.
