Views From Our Shoes: Growing Up With a Brother or Sister With Special Needs, Donald Meyer, Editor. Woodbine House: 1997. $14.95
Views From Our Shoes is a collection of 45 essays by youth aged four to eighteen who have siblings with cerebral palsy, autism, Down Syndrome, and other disabilities.
The youth express a range of experiences, from feeling that their siblings with disabilities “get away with too much,” to feeling protective of their sibling when others tease. The book focuses on the abilities of youth with disabilities and illustrates the need for community support for all members of the family.
