Adult Services
Community Home Service
The mission of UCP Central PA broadly extends from providing therapy services to providing everyday experiences for persons with a disability, enabling them to fully participate in society. Together, with like-minded Cumberland County agencies, UCP Central PA has built accessible residences for adults where they can participate in and enjoy neighborhood living. Community Home Services (CHS) provides persons with disabilities with the opportunity to live in safe, friendly communities.
About the Program
With the support and guidance of program staff, the residents in our CHS homes achieve skills for independent living in a community setting. Every morning, Monday through Friday, the residents leave for work or a day program, returning home in the late afternoon. They then tend to daily living chores, personal needs, or social plans, assisted as needed by the program staff. The staff also provides guidance on life management skills, such as household chores, personal care, financial management, shopping, and health care, in a manner that promotes independence. The residents are encouraged to seek and choose a lifestyle that allows for full participation within the community.
Beginning in June of 2003, Cumberland/Perry Housing Initiatives, Inc. (CPHI) and United Cerebral Palsy of Central Pennsylvania, Inc. (UCP) began the construction of three new homes to replace existing homes.
The new homes are completely accessible. They were designed with assistance from UCP's Occupational Therapy and Assistive Technology departments. Resident-friendly features include roll-in showers, a kitchen with wheelchair space under the stove top (pictured) and sink, and four bedrooms. An enclosed garage provides protection during inclement weather. Residents and their guests, may enjoy relaxing on the patio. Should the need arise for quick and safe evacuation, four exits were built into each home. The living area is spacious and can accommodate residents in a wheelchair or individuals with difficult mobility.
