Adapted Aquatics

The philosophy of the Swim Program is "Sports by Ability - not Disability." Training and competitions in swimming are provided for persons with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities. Participants enjoy the benefits of improved self-confidence, physical fitness, self-esteem and independence. Fitness activities are an important part of life for people with disabilities. Swimming provides a unique opportunity for an individual to develop a personal sense of accomplishment and well being.

What Is The Aquatics Program?
UCP Aquatics Program offers intermediate-to-advanced level swim training throughout the year for individuals with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. The program provides opportunities for social and psychological growth through participation in both individual swim training classes and local and national swim team competitions. Participants can enjoy the benefits of improved self confidence, physical fitness, self esteem and independence. Swimming provides a unique opportunity for an individual to develop a personal sense of accomplishment and well-being.

How Does It Work?
Currently, Intermediate-level swim classes are held in 9 week sessions in the Fall, Winter and Spring in Kearny Mesa (on Saturday mornings). Summer swim clinics are offered based on volunteer availability. The program coordinator, coaches and volunteers work together as a team to provide individualized instruction to each swimmer in the pool. As swimmers develop their competitive skills, they can begin competing in local meets.

Elite Training Program
Athletes who wish to enter regional and national competitions can train year round in our advanced program. This readies individuals for a higher level of competition. Our swim team is called the San Diego Bullets and enter competitions as a team effort.

Who Is Eligible?
The swim program is designed for people with physical disabilities. People with other disabilities may also benefit from the program. Ages served are 5 years throughout adulthood.

Please call us to help you locate swim programs offered in San Diego County and to be added to the mailing list for the Aquatics Newsletter and other program notifications.
