In-Home Respite
The In-Home Respite Care Program provides trained respite staff to assume care of the eligible individual, and when applicable, his/her siblings for a period not to exceed ten hours in one 24 hour period. The parent, guardian, or individual may call the Respite Case Manager to request a worker on the date and time designated by the family. It is the responsibility of the Respite Case Manager to attempt to find a respite provider to fill the requested respite. The Respite department cannot guarantee that every respite requested will be filled.
Once scheduled, a respite most frequently takes place in the home of the individual enrolled in the Respite Program. Respites can also occur at alternate locations according to the wishes of the family. It is the policy of the Respite Program that a respite cannot occur in the home of the assigned respite worker. It is also the policy of the Family Support/Respite department that respite staff may not transport individuals or their siblings in either the worker’s car or in the family’s car. Parents, guardians, siblings and others living in the home may leave the home for the duration of the scheduled respite or they may stay at home while the provider is there.
The Respite Program offers families the option of a pre-respite. A pre-respite is a scheduled time for families to meet respite workers in advance of the respite date so that training can be provided by primary caregivers. This is dependent upon program staff and families finding a mutually agreed upon time to meet. For this reason, families are encouraged to call well in advance of the respite date to arrange a pre-respite.
The Respite Program will hire respite workers known to families when the referred worker demonstrates that s/he meets the agency qualifications for all respite staff. The exception to this is that Respite Workers may not provide services to participants living in the same home.
