BEGINNING WITH TEWKSBURY, UCP AT THE LEADING EDGE OF DEVELOPING AFFORDABLE, ACCESSIBLE HOUSING

At UCP, we’re driven by a passion to be resourceful and innovative in expanding housing opportunities that speak to the changing needs of individuals with disabilities and their families across the lifespan. With a wealth of experience in successfully managing independent and supported living facilities, we’re expanding our capabilities to creatively provide even more accessible, affordable housing alternatives and support services.

One of the ways we’re expanding our capabilities is through partnerships with municipalities, counties, local businesses, community service organizations and interested citizens. Through these innovative partnerships, we’re excited to be transforming existing structures and building state-of-the-art rental units that literally open doors for the individuals and families we serve.

Our inaugural housing development community in partnership with Tewksbury Township is now under construction. Slated for completion in late Fall, 2007, this new community sits nestled in picturesque former farmland on Oldwick Road just north of Route 78. The eighteen-unit single story structure was designed and is being constructed with leading edge “green” technology and materials. This will preserve the natural beauty of the site by minimizing the visual and environmental impacts of the buildings.

Each living unit will include special accessibility features such as oversized rooms with ample wheelchair turning radii; extra wide hallways; roll-in bathroom showers; pocket doors; lower kitchen counters and work spaces; accessible kitchen appliances; touch pad electrical/light controls and more. Mindful of the high cost of energy, we’ve placed particular emphasis on energy efficiency by including multi-zone heating and air conditioning systems with multi-zone room temperature controls. The site will also include a community center, suitable for socializing and special events.

Community integration is an important objective of our housing effort. Tewksbury residents will be encouraged to volunteer in their neighborhood, become civically active, and participate in local recreational and other community activities. UCP will provide a list of service providers in Hunterdon County and will provide additional support services on an as-needed basis.

Presently we are maintaining a list of interested people who will receive notice when the application process begins. If you’d like to be added to the list or if you need additional details, please contact Don Stephens at (908) 879-2243.
