Assistive Technology

The goal of UCP Central PA's Assistive Technology Services is simple: put more technology into the hands of more people with disabilities. Technology, especially assistive and network technology, is the key to future growth, independence, employment and economic self-sufficiency for people with disabilities. The primary barriers to expanded successful utilization of Assistive Technology are:

  • Lack of information for persons with disability, family members and professionals about the potential of assistive technology;
  • Lack of training for person with disability, family members and professionals about the means of accessing and funding assistive technology; and
  • Fragmentation of evaluation, comparison, selection, and maintenance of assistive technology for persons with disability.

What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive technology is any device or service that increases, maintains, or improves the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

An assistive technology device is any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially or off-the-shelf, custom made, or modified, that is used to enable people with disabilities to communicate, learn, play, achieve, work, and be independent in their community.

An assistive technology service is any service that directly assists an individual with a disability to select, obtain, or use an assistive device.

UCP Central PA is continuously searching for ways to expand our AT programs. Several grant applications are being prepared at this time. For more information on our AT projects or for information on how you can become involved, please email Jackie Wardle, Assistive Technology Specialist, or call Jackie at 800-998-4UCP.

Assistive Technology Services are funded, in part, by the community's contribution to the United Way of the Capital Region.
