Success Stories

Dwayne and Demi Keller

Dwayne and Demi are an excellent example of why UCP is important, today, tommorrow, and well into the future.

A young boy with cerebral palsy did not have any cognitive delays; however he needed extensive therapy to help him learn to live with his physical disability. Through UCP’s preschool services, he received physical therapy to help him learn to navigate his environment safely. As a result, he was able to successfully transition into the public school system.

A father of two with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often called Lou Gehrig’s disease, did not want his family to have to provide daily care for him. Therefore, UCP provided him with support for his daily living needs including, respite, Lifeline, service coordination, and community integration. The support reduces the stress and workload on his family and allows him to live independently in the community.

An individual suffered a brain stem injury as the result of a work related accident. He was paralyzed from the neck down leaving him without a means to communicate and control his environment. UCP performed an evaluation, and provided him with the equipment and training he needed at the facility where he lived. He is now using a laptop for speech, environmental control, banking, and Internet access, and has regained independence and control over his life.
