History
UCP of Southern Illinois was incorporated December 1, 1959. At that time, "the purpose of the corporation was to promote the general welfare of persons handicapped with cerebral palsy; to furnish facilities for diagnostic and treatment for the care of the cerebral palsied; to furnish facilities for camps, social programs, education, etc."
While we now cringe at the terminology listed above, this language was politically correct at the time. Children with disabilities did not receive the right to an education until 1974. Individuals with disabilities should not be referred to as: victims, crippled, afflicted or suffering from as they are a person first, the disability is second.
